A comprehensive eye exam is about more than checking how clearly you can see. Evaluating the health of the retina can help us identify changes that may affect your vision, sometimes before noticeable symptoms develop. At River Place Vision Center in Austin, we use Optomap retinal imaging as part of our advanced eye care technology to obtain a detailed, ultra-wide view of the retina.
Optomap is an ultra-widefield retinal imaging technology that captures a broad image of the retina, including areas toward the retinal periphery that may be more difficult to examine with conventional retinal photography.
The retina is the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. It plays an essential role in converting light into signals that are sent to the brain, allowing you to see. Optomap imaging can capture up to approximately 200 degrees of the retina in a single image, giving us an expanded view of retinal health.
The imaging process is quick and noninvasive. After the images are captured, we can review them with you and explain any areas that may require closer attention.
Because Optomap provides a wide view of the retina, it may help us recognize signs associated with several eye health concerns. Depending on what appears in the images, we may identify or monitor changes related to:
• Retinal tears, holes, or areas of concern in the retinal periphery
• Diabetic retinopathy and changes involving retinal blood vessels
• Macular degeneration and other conditions affecting central vision
• Changes involving the optic nerve or other retinal structures that may require further evaluation
Retinal images can also provide useful documentation over time. Comparing images from one comprehensive eye exam to the next can help us identify subtle changes and determine whether additional testing, monitoring, or treatment may be appropriate.
Many retinal and eye health conditions can develop without obvious symptoms in their early stages. Clear vision does not always mean that every part of the eye is healthy.
Optomap imaging gives us another way to examine and document the retina during your visit. It can be especially useful when evaluating patients with risk factors such as diabetes, a personal or family history of certain eye diseases, or unexplained visual changes.
If anything concerning is found, additional testing or a dilated eye examination may still be recommended. Optomap is an important diagnostic tool, but the appropriate testing depends on your individual eye health and exam findings.
At River Place Vision Center, we combine comprehensive eye care with advanced technology to help us evaluate both your vision and overall eye health. Optomap retinal imaging allows us to take a closer look at the back of the eye and gives patients an opportunity to see and better understand their own retinal images.
