Eye Injury

Vision is made up of complex interactions between multiple parts of the body eye. For you to see, light must pass through the cornea, the pupil, the lens, and the receptor rods in the retina at the back of the eye. Any injury, problem, or degeneration of any of these parts will interfere with vision and cause issues including fuzzy vision, headaches, pain, and blindness.

Injuries That Require Emergency Eye Care

There are many potential eye injuries, but some are more common than others. Injuries that require emergency eye care include:

  • Any kind of physical injury to the eye such as a puncture, cut, or tear, even if small and barely visible. Physical injuries to the eye can easily become infected.
  • Acute glaucoma, which occurs when there is a sudden increase of fluid in the eye, creating pressure. Patients suffering from acute glaucoma experience pain, redness, vision problems, and nausea.
  • Retinal detachment, which occurs when the back of the eye separates from its normal position. Symptoms of retinal detachment include floaters and specks of light in the field of vision. Retinal detachment can lead to vision loss.
  • Exposure to irritating chemicals, which damage the eye’s surface. This can lead to discomfort and even blindness depending on the chemical

Treatment Process

When you visit River Place Vision Center, our optometrist will assess your eyes to determine the correct course of treatment. Our optometrist may dilate your pupils with eye drops to examine your eyes more closely. When the source of your vision problem has been determined, our optometrist will begin treatment. Treatments range from topical treatments to surgery. In no case should a patient try to treat themselves and forsake emergency eye care.
